Interior House Tour

As I update our WAY outdated house tour (from March ‘09 – yikes),  I’ll be posting individual rooms one at a time to give you a look at how things really look around here today!
We’ve come a long way. Although I often feel as if there are SO many things I want to do and not enough
money, time, drive, inspiration,
whatever and I beat myself up for it…
it’s great to look at these pictures. What a difference!

We invite you to enjoy a tour of some original and some current pictures of our home.

Right away we removed the wood paneling throughout the foyer and family room and replaced it with drywall. We also removed the handrail/bookshelf, painted it and used it as a bookshelf.
The bookshelf just was too cluttered, so I sold it and replaced it with a barn sale find. I painted our doors black and our skinny window trim white, as well as added a chandelier, curtains, 2 jute rugs, an entry table, and a kid sized table and chairs. All items were found at garage sales, with the exception of this rug, the curtains, and our conduit curtain rod.
Cost of furniture and accessories? $86!
(or $46 if you subtract what we made on the bookshelf)
In the future, we plan on either adding a banister or reconfiguring the area near the door, adding wood floors to replace the old laminate tile, and finishing the doors and windows with trim.

We removed the wood paneling and droopy ceiling tiles and replaced them with insulation and drywall. We replaced the windows, but took the one on the north wall and replaced it with a sliding glass door, which will one day lead to a patio/eating area.
Since the middle photo, we added curtains, painted the skinny trim around the windows, went with a new color scheme and arrangement, added a bookshelf, and added new lamps. The picture is already outdated as I painted the lamps a week after this photo. ;)
Cost of furniture and accessories? $173!
The couches were free and everything else
was found at garage sales, with the exception of the curtains and our conduit curtain rod.
We kept the existing carpet and will replace the carpet and laminate tile with wood floors. We also plan on adding trim around the windows and door.

We reconfigured the cabinets, removed the double oven and replaced it with a cabinet, painted the cabinets and the existing knobs and hinges, installed a new light fixture, and painted the room. Later, we added new countertops to the kitchen. We sold our beloved green monster and replaced it with a white one and painted the trim around the window white.

In the future, we’d like to replace the laminate tile with wood floors, paint the remainder of the trim in this room, as well as paint a different shade above the cabinets.

Although the furnishings in the August ‘09 picture are adorable, they belonged to the previous owner!

We patched and painted the room, as well as the crown moulding that was in such poor condition, we almost ripped it out. We replaced the drafty and broken original wood windows with white, energy efficient windows. We brought in our tiny table and chairs set, as well as added a chandelier from a garage sale.

We painted and distressed a corner cabinet and hutch, that process is here and here.

But the table just wasn’t enough for our growing family. Doug’s mom helped us find this black and wood set at a garage sale and it completely changed the room.

Cost of all furniture and accessories? $259!
($159 if you subtract what we made from selling the old table!)

I’d like to paint at least the trim around the window white, maybe even all of it. I do have curtains and a curtain rod, they’re just waiting to be hung. :)

The previous owners were using this room as a bedroom, but we are using it as a living room. We repaired the crown molding, painted it white, and painted the room. We replaced the light fixture and added our furniture.
We took out the coffee table for more space, I got a little crazy and painted the oil-rubbed bronze chandelier white (love it), and added in a light sisal rug. The changes really brighten the space.

Cost of all furniture and accessories? (you’re going to hate me) $26!

The desk, couch, and chandelier were all free, given to us from family members. I don’t have curtains, and this room is pretty bare when it comes to art. ;)
In the near future, I’m planning on painting all of the trim in this room white. I’d like to sell the roll top desk, move the couch into our family room and replace it with two comfy chairs. I’ll be adding art, curtains, and convert this room to a fun play area!

I have so many ideas for this room but it always seems to get the back burner (and the stuff thrown in it when we have company). I’m trying to sell our bed, and then this one is next on our list.
Stay tuned!

I’m in the process of painting and redesigning the built-in kids’ bookshelf and infusing some more color and fun into the room.
Stay tuned!

When we first looked at the house, we thought we’d have to replace the bath, shower surround, sink, and toilet due to the severe rust. After trying our favorite all-natural household cleaner, Basic H, CLR, and even bleach, none could handle the rust. We tried Shaklee’s Scour-Off, and the rust came off with no problem.
Doug has since installed a whole-house water filter and it has dramatically cut down on the amount of rust we once had. Other than that, nothing much has changed.
We have a lot of ideas on what we’d like to do, as well as fixtures and other things ready to be installed. It is gross, but it has a lot of great storage here, and in the linen closet.
We will be adding a full bath directly above this room and will need to get to the pipes within these walls to do so. Although we’re ready to gut it and remodel NOW, we plan on waiting until after construction has started on the upstairs bathroom.

We got a great deal on an LG washer and most recently (not pictured), a Fisher and Paykel dryer from craigslist.
We cleaned things up and added a few accents and it looks like a lot brighter and doing laundry down here isn’t such a chore. We’ve added some storage that needs a bit of organization, as well as a deep freezer that we hope to fill this summer and fall.

Updated photo of our basement and laundry room, coming soon.

We are still using the second floor as storage, but hope to finish it within the next year. It is a large space, approximately 30 by 12 and with peaked ceilings and reached by a beautiful wooden stairway.

We plan on adding one large bedroom (to the back), a full bath (near the stairway), and a little nook to be used as a sitting area, closets, or space for the kids (near the front). The peak on the right leads to an area the size of our living room and will be perfect for storing the stuff that is currently up here.

Everything looks great! Thinking you might be nesting…trying to get everything done so that you can work outside as soon as the weather breaks!

  3. Becolorful says:

Looking good. So fun to see it evolve.

  4. Bonnie says:

You have really been working! Looks great. All your hard work paid off.

  5. I love all the work you have done! I always wanted a fixer upper in the country, but we couldn't find one. So we built in the country. I just love seeing so much potential turn into something loved :)

  6. Hannah says:

Wow, the before pictures look strangely like my house. We're renting a 100-year old stone house with the same wood paneling and tiled ceiling, old linoleum and carpet, and even the rather horrendous bathroom! It's so nice to see that something ugly can be turned into something lovely like your home. You've done a great job!

  7. Thank you for letting us "walk through" your house. I love it!!The attic is WAY cool, too!

  8. I luff before and afters. I thought my wood panneling was bad, you win! Seriously what you've done is awesome. The second story has so much potential, on ours we are actually going to bust one of the rooms into the huge attic space and make it a master bedroom/bathroom suite as well. Exciting times!

  9. Thank you for the home tour! You guys have made some great changes, it really looks "home-y" (I'm a math teacher, not always good with words =) )! I especially love the kitchen changes! Awesome!

  10. Oh my goodness, I love it!Seeing how wonderful your home has turned out gives me hope that we could transform a home of our own someday.

  11. Michelle says:

You did a great job!! I wish we had taken pictures as we went along with all the things we did to fix up our place. Congrats on all youve done to make your home how you wanted and beautiful!
