Upcycled VHS Tape Wreath

I’m sure you have a pile of these sitting in a basement, box, or maybe still next to your TV. I’ve been trying to rack my brain to see if there was a way we could recycle old VHS tapes.

I’ve had this idea in my head for a few months now and wanted to try it out.

After I heard about the CSI project’s Mod Podge theme,

Visit thecsiproject.com

I thought this would be the perfect time to try it out!

First, I took a hoop frame, stuck a bamboo skewer in it, spray painted it black, and stuck it in the ground to dry.

I took apart the VHS tape and tried to think of a plan of action.

image image

I cut the film tape into strips, brushed Mod Podge onto the hoop in sections, and wrapped the film around it, shiny side out.

I love the shiny, metallic, almost mirrored finish of the film!

After the hoop was wrapped, I bunched and crumpled up the tape to add some texture. I looped the tape much like when you’re making a bow,

image

twisted it, and secured it by tying a shorter piece of tape around the base of the flower.

image

Then, I pinned each flower to the foam base.

image

I love it!

Even against my black door, it looks sharp

add some orange, and it’s perfect for Halloween!

image

the wreath wanted to pretend to be a model, so we went into the yard

image

okay maybe I went a little too far, cause now it’s starting to look like a tire swing…

Free, recycled, and oh-so-fine – what more could you ask for in your decor?

  1. GASP! I LOVE it! Now I have to go on the hunt for some VHS movies and try to recreate this beauty. As soon as I saw the first photo I thought it had Halloween written all over it with a splash of orange added. Thanks for the comment and ideas! Let me ask you this I was planning on going with a brown leather couch but now I'm thinking doing the tables black (With distressing of course!) would look REALLY good but I'm not so sure about how a black lather couch would look. Any other ideas on fabric/color choice for a couch? I'm STUCK on that one ugh! I love your house it's so adorable and homey looking. I can't wait until we can sell our house and buy a old victorian house. Anyways thanks for showing the how-to on this awesome recycled wreath!

  37. What a cute (and cheap!) idea. It actually looks pretty glam too. After Hurricane Irene, we upcycled some jars from food we had to throw out and branches from the trees that fell into cute little candle holders (or as I like to call them because I love puns, "Hurricanes.")Here's the tutorial I posted:http://makeanddogirl.com/2011/09/hurricane-irene-hurricanes-tutorial/
