Every year since 2011 I’ve done a project that has changed my life forever. Since then, thousands of people have joined in and changed their lives too. The project is called 40 BAGS IN 40 DAYS, and I’ll explain how it can change your life too.
What is 40 Bags in 40 Days?
40 bags in 40 days is a forty day period (coinciding with the 40 days of Lent) where you declutter one area a day.
The goal is one bag a day, however you can have more or less. The 2017 Challenge starts March 1st and goes to April 15th. Millions of people have read about #40Bagsin40Days and 2017 will be my 7th year hosting the challenge.
Can’t wait for the official challenge? Start now!
How do I start?
- Print this printable plan and follow the instructions. It will help you plan your ideal progress, then record your actual progress each day.
- Read these lists: possible areas to declutter and “non-stuff” things to declutter. You can use these on your printable, one a day so you don’t burn out.
- (NEW) Join our daily email course. I’ve had requests for something more in-depth to keep you from burning out. You’ll also get a link to an exclusive Facebook group, plus more hands on support.
- Like our facebook page, I’ll be doing the challenge and will have check-ins, live videos. Follow me on Instagram as well and jump in on the #40bagsin40days hashtag.
- Join our Facebook group; we have 42,000 members and growing!
- Sign up for our blog newsletter to be notified of new blog posts.
- Go through each day of your plan and get rid of stuff. It’s really as easy as that! You can stick to the plan, or switch up the days as they fit into your life.
Going through our whole home once a year has helped us live a simple life. My husband and I have five young children and live in a 2200 sq ft home. I’ve seen the impact it has made on our family. It is easy for everyone to pitch in because 1) they know where things go and 2) when you have less stuff, it is easier to keep it clean.
The more we have simplified our life, the better it gets. It is an ongoing process and you may have to do hard work and make tough decisions. I like how 40 Bags in 40 Days gives my home a refresh. I can see what’s working (and what’s not working), and look at our “stuff” in a new light.
With this challenge you’ll be working together with myself and hundreds of thousands of people all interested in the same goal: simplifying.
Ready to take on the challenge?
Wonderful, welcome to the family! I’ve set up a few things to help keep you motivated:
1.) Daily Progress Printable
This printable will help you plan and keep track of your progress. It is designed so that you have one day off per week, I use Sunday but you can pick the day.
Charting your progress is the best way to stay motivated, as you see the bags add up, you’ll want to keep going through the rest of your home.
Download your free printable here, or click the image:
To use the printable, follow these instructions.
Starting March 1st I will have check-ins on facebook. With the new Facebook LIVE feature, I’ll be doing videos of live decluttering in my own home. You can declutter as you watch and see my thought process while cleaning.
We have one of the best, most positive facebook communities out there (maybe I’m biased). :)
I’ve also set up a facebook group where members can post their progress and motivate one another. There are thousands of members and it is a really supportive group of people. Only members can see the contents of the group. Posts may show up on YOUR personal newsfeed. Your friends can see you are in the group, but they cannot see what you post unless they are also in the group.
3.) Daily Email Course
I’m excited to offer this new option for 2017!
I’ve had requests for an in-depth version of the challenge for those who want to make sure they complete the challenge. Along with daily email lessons for the duration of the challenge, you’ll also receive an invite to an exclusive version of our popular Facebook group. Get more details and sign up here:
4.) #40BAGSIN40DAYS on Instagram:
I’ll be posting daily over on Instagram, you can find me at @whitehouseblackshutters.
If you’re posting a picture, please use the hashtag #40bagsin40days!
Let’s face it, everything looks good in black and white or with a pretty filter on it. Even your bags of crap. ;) Here’s a picture you can share to all of your people (if on your phone hold your finger on it, save the image, and share on instagram):
I’ve found this particularly helpful when I didn’t want to do my day’s bag. I’d take a picture of a dirty crazy room. Then freak out a tiny bit because I just shared that embarrassing mess to uhh, EVERYONE. But then what happened was almost magical. I’D GO NUTS ON THAT ROOM because I wanted to prove to all those Instagram people I am not a slob.
It was incredibly motivating. Follow me (@whitehouseblackshutters), say hi, and tag me in a post if you are participating with us on Instagram! And don’t forget the #40bagsin40days hashtag when you post so you can connect with other participants.
5.) Sign up for the blog newsletter
These emails will be sent out less frequently, letting you know of new blog posts or 40 Bags in 40 Days updates. If you’d like to join the daily email course instead, you can find more info here.
6.) Tell everyone you know.
I want everyone I know to join us.
I want everyone you know to join us.
I want to change our lives, I want to see your progress. Big or small, embarrassing or beautiful. I want to help you and I want you to become a better version of yourself. We are in this together!
Because you know what?
- You don’t need all of this stuff.
- It won’t make you happier.
- Your home should not make you feel overwhelmed or stressed.
- You do not need to be embarrassed.
- You can do this. (repeat that)
- You are not alone.
I want to start a revolution against all of this stuff that everyone tries to sell us and tell us we need.
I want your home to be a place where you are surrounded with only the things and people you love. You shouldn’t feel controlled by the paper clutter, the craft supplies from projects never carried out, the furniture Great Aunt Sally passed down to you, nor clothes telling you what size you used to be.
You need this. I need this. I want you to join me. Seeing so many faces doing this motivates ME to do my own home, haha!
We are all here for you and we love you and we want to see you succeed! We want to free you from the unnecessary stuff in your life keeping you from being happy.
