Basement Laundry Room Clean-up

Two weekends ago on our facebook page, I mentioned that we had a little mishap with our septic system.

Not little, kinda big. As in it needed to be emptied and we had septic poo water back up into our washing machine and into our basement. Gross.

In our defense, there was an issue with the pipe leading to the septic field, but it’s fixed now! And the area was ready for cleaning, decluttering, and a tiny makeover.

IMG_4859

We started with quite a few “tub clean” and “sanitary” cycles in the washer, and a whole lot of cleaning and scrubbing and mopping (thanks, Doug). Trust me when I say that you don’t want me to confirm what those little tiny bits of white paper are on the floor…

IMG_4800

Scrubbed the floor, let it dry, moved the washer and dryer, swept it, and scrubbed again. It was a pain, but was good to get clean anyway. I mean, have you ever scrubbed your basement floor? I know we hadn’t.

IMG_4802

I took a lamp that I couldn’t sell in our garage sale (lamp = Goodwill find, shade = Target clearance find), a little bit of greenery and added it to our glass jars filled with detergent.

Kinda makes our pipes a little less… pipey? Hey, the industrial look is big right now…

IMG_4804

That room and floor look cleaner than some other rooms upstairs! ;)

IMG_4805

I cleaned off the clutter on the old drafting table (Goodwill find – $10!), so we could, you know, actually FOLD LAUNDRY ON IT.

I’ve been meaning to get in a laundry routine once we moved out of our apartment and had our own washer and dryer. One load a day. Not overwhelming myself with more than one, not making excuses on why I can’t throw one in. Wash it, dry it, fold it, put it away. Our couch doesn’t need to be used as a laundry holding spot! ;)

IMG_4859

Although I’ve been trying to get in this routine for 2.5 years now, I’m proud (could say embarrassed, but won’t) to say that I’m finally getting there. It’s been a full week now, I’m all caught up, and I’ve done a load a day! It feels almost like a routine and I do it first thing in the morning to get it out of the way.

Here’s the system that’s been working so far:

IMG_4863

I have a basket of whites and a basket of delicates (Doug’s work shirts and pants, my delicates) in kinda of a holding station underneath the table. The wicker basket is the hamper we keep upstairs, and we use it for everyone’s clothes. The tiny white garbage can is for lint, dryer sheets, tags, or garbage.

From failed “laundry system” attempts, I’ve found that with more than one hamper or larger ones, the clothes pile up. This keeps me from doing it often. With our small family and tiny kid clothes, it works!

I’ve been bringing the basket down every morning and either empty it into a basket down there, or into the washer. If one of the white baskets is getting full, I’ll throw that in for the day. If we don’t have enough of the whites, delicates, or regular clothes, I’ll do towels and bathroom rugs. I want to do those once a week when I do a deep clean of the bathroom!

IMG_4886

When folding down here, I like to bring my computer down to listen to Pandora. It makes things go by so much faster! The kids will also play in their play area, and I like that I can easily peek in on them,

IMG_4858

or they can come peek in on me. That’s another thing that’s kept me from doing daily laundry down here! It’s hard to sneak down to fold laundry when you have two busy toddlers.

IMG_4844

and can I just say real quick that if you don’t have a carrier of some sort – get a carrier of some sort. Mine is a mei tei, it makes life so much easier! I can hold Adam while doing laundry, heck I’ll say it, I can even nurse him while doing it. :)

image

Here’s a before and after!

I got rid of the rugs down here since we get a bit of seepage and I was tired of the soggy wet sock surprise when I stepped on it. The lamp was updated, the detergent is all pretty now, and hey look! We’ve got a new dryer since then. It was a Craigslist find, it’s a Fisher and Paykel and was $40.

Overall, a little less cluttered.

image

Here’s the really old before, a pic we took while originally looking at the house. Wow!! I’d never do laundry if I had to do it there – ha!

Do you have any tips or tricks when it comes to laundry?
Do you rock a basement laundry room?

Evolution of a Christmas Tree, Making Your Tree Glow!

How was your weekend? Are you all ready for Christmas??

We finished decorating around here and kinda just hung out. My little sister had a birthday party at an indoor pool (the kids loved it!) on Friday night, I worked and Doug fixed our car (new radiator – blah) Saturday afternoon, and Doug’s parents and family came over on Sunday. Each night though, we took it easy and watched movies together. It was nice. :)

I’m totally not ready for Christmas, I was hoping to have my shopping done by the 1st of Dec – HA! Yeah right, didn’t happen. But in my defense, we have been busy… I’m headed out today to hopefully try and finish that up. Did you finish?

Thanks to pinterest, I learned from the mistakes I’ve made in the past and actually taken GOOD pictures of our tree this year!

Take a look at these two tutorials that really helped me:

this one also focuses on using your point and shoot in manual mode and making it work for you:

And I thought it’d be fun to look at the evolution of our tree over the last four years!

The first three years we used a pre-lit tree. This year we decided to go with a real tree and I love it. :) All four years, you can see how the big honkin’ speaker found its way into the picture… LOL.

  • 2008: did not know how to take a picture to save my life, hand-me-down ornaments from my mom, grandma, and mother-in-law. I fell in love with that garland from Michaels and after finding it for 75% off, I called every store within a 30 mile radius, drove around, and ended up with 8 strands! I know Doug probably thought I was crazy (you know, pregnant and only 6 months married), but I am SO GLAD I did, and even kinda wish I drove around and found more! ;)
  • 2009: getting better taking pics, but didn’t realize that you should take the clutter out of pictures before taking them. Silver garland, gold beads, hand-me-down ornaments, new tree skirt and stockings! They were a 60% off Black Friday deal at Kohl’s. I went back after Christmas and got two more stockings (had four – was pregnant with Ben), and I’m glad I did because this year we’re using 5 of them!  This was shortly after I started blogging. :)

IMG_2215 image

  • 2010: frustrated by pictures on all the awesome blogs out there and edited my pictures WAAAAAY too heavily! Made a burlap tree star, burlap garland, and only used ball ornaments and icicles. (I thought it looked so formal and pretty last year! This year I think it looks kinda generic…) Looking back at posts, I think I was kinda stressed out with two little ones, and being way too hard on myself. I later loosened up a bit. :)
  • 2011: real tree, learned how to use my still-a-point-and-shoot camera, same burlap and garland but went back to the hand-me-down ornaments along with a big tub of red ornaments found at a garage sale. I shared my icicle tutorial and added more!
  •    image IMG_4336

Also this year, we decided to do an ornament exchange and it’s been so nice receiving your handmade goodies in the mail! I was a little nervous about making 21 ornaments, LOL but getting them has been awesome and so worth it.

What theme/décor did you use on your tree this year? Other years? Real tree or fake? If you have any links of your tree or home tours, feel free to post them in the comments! I’d love to see them!!!!

White Chandeliers and Front Room Transformation

Inspired by a chandelier I saw at a garage sale, I decided to paint my similarly shaped oil-rubbed bronze chandelier white!

image

Take a look at our front (frunch) room! I’m giving it a makeover of my own…

image

Much improved from the last photo you saw of this room.

Embarrasing. Pitiful. Pshhhh, those slobs.

image

But forget I posted that and submitted it for the world to see (and lost 5 followers in the process), LOOK AT IT NOW!

image

All I did was a 5 min cleanup, switch out with my new C&B rug, and paint the chandelier. Oh snap, I love it.

$200-$450 bones for that sisal rug if you bought it. Mine for $20. No, I will never stop talking about this rug!!!

imageimage

I also hung a white chandelier in the hallway to replace the one I so hastily took down. It was originally brass, I paid $3.50.

image

Excuse the dresser on its way out, as well as the peeling paint. This room is over due for a I-was-a-nerd-but-look-at-me-now (snap, snap, SNAP!) Maury style makeover. The chandelier is a step in the right direction… ya think?

image

Maybe it’s the nicer weather and increased sun (and Vit D) flowing through me, but I feel like I’ve had a burst of energy when it comes to tackling house projects. Maybe it’s now that I’m a little bit lighter without the added 47 bags of STUFF?

I feel like I’m back in business. And it feels so good.

Anyone else get that way?

So excited to paint trim, start projects. :)

Curly Cane Chair

Our garage sale is this Friday and Saturday, so this last week was spent clearing out and oh, it feels so good!

Although I’m getting rid of a lot, have some going to Goodwill, and even a bag of garbage, I really haven’t had to haul over as much as I have in the past.

Although I won’t be making as much, I’m happy.

It seems that we’re making changes, clearing out the crap, not buying as much crap, and anything being sold is something that I could keep (and toyed with keeping, haha), but that I’m not keeping.

It’s the first big sign that I’m getting better and changing. :)

Like this chair – I love it, but I don’t need it.  I’ll enjoy the before and after, but move on and let someone else love it. imageimage

Shutter Love

If you know us, you know we’re a fan of the thrifty.

And since we are “white house, black shutters,” we needed some shutters on our tan house to make at least half of the name true!

I mentioned that we were starting our project here,

image

gave you a little preview here,

image

even spray painted my feet black,

but here they are!

image imageimageimage

We saved money by not being super picky about the sizing and only using second-hand shutters.

IMG_5803

Scoured freecycle.org, hit up craigslist, and our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

IMG_5806 image

Waiting a year to get all of fifteen of them saved us a total of $328.00, or $27.34 per shutter!

image

Since they were all different colors than the color we actually needed, we sprayed all of the shutters using Rustoleum Satin black spray paint, which has a built-in clear coat and is made for outdoor projects.

image

Two coats for each shutter meant that a $4.50 (?) can was enough for three shutters, so we used 10 cans.

Total cost for the shutters, including spray paint? $77.00 total, or $2.56 a shutter!

Some before and afters for ya, watch as we go from a

white house, to a tan house, to a tan house with black shutters!
