If you know us, you know we’re a fan of the thrifty.
And since we are “white house, black shutters,” we needed some shutters on our tan house to make at least half of the name true!
I mentioned that we were starting our project here,
gave you a little preview here,
even spray painted my feet black,
but here they are!
We saved money by not being super picky about the sizing and only using second-hand shutters.
Scoured freecycle.org, hit up craigslist, and our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
Waiting a year to get all of fifteen of them saved us a total of $328.00, or $27.34 per shutter!
Since they were all different colors than the color we actually needed, we sprayed all of the shutters using Rustoleum Satin black spray paint, which has a built-in clear coat and is made for outdoor projects.
Two coats for each shutter meant that a $4.50 (?) can was enough for three shutters, so we used 10 cans.
Total cost for the shutters, including spray paint? $77.00 total, or $2.56 a shutter!
Some before and afters for ya, watch as we go from a
white house, to a tan house, to a tan house with black shutters!

Even though we sell shutters, I love that you were able to find recycled shutters. They look fantastic.

Your home looks beautiful!!! We just bought our first house( tan house black shutters) but it needs a new roof ASAP. Just wondering what color your roof is. We are struggling between black and weathered wood. Thanks
Ann Marie
Thanks, Jenn! So we're house twins?! Sweet!
I'm not sure about the roof color because the owner added it a few years before we moved in, but I've seen it in Menards ads through the years. It has shades of light and dark gray, a slate blue, and even green. Kinda a weird color just looking at that, but I really like it, kinda reminds me of a slate roof. I really like the idea of the weathered wood, esp if your tan is more dark or grayish. If it's lighter or beige-y, I'd probably go black.
Good luck with your decision, let me know (if you remember) what you guys decide!

It looks great! From reading your initial post on the shutters, I spotted our local ReStore and made a mental note to get anything for future home projects from there. 🙂

What a great update! The shutters look fantastic, but the best part is how well you saved.
