We all have stressors during the holidays and this month the Michaels Makers were asked to come up with creative and fun holiday hacks and tips to help relieve some of that stress and make holiday entertaining and prepping fun! We were given 5 common holiday hiccups to choose from and I went with updating your old holiday decor.
I don't like spending money. I like buying stuff, haha, but I don't like spending money. As much as I'd love to, I can't go out every year and splurge on new Christmas decor. If I'm going to have a new look, I'm either going to make it or I'm going to repurpose what I have.
Here are three quick #holidayhacks, to refresh the Christmas decor sitting in your storage bins!
ORNAMENT MAGNETS
Our kids are always taking down our Christmas tree ornaments and playing with them. Can't say I blame them! I fondly remember making our "skiing Kermit" ornament ski down mounds of laundry, blankets, and pillows. 🙂
I took some of our ornaments and attached magnets to the back with hot glue. This is especially great for heavy ornaments and handmade ones! Once they are ready to be ornaments again, it's easy to string them back onto the tree, magnets still attached.
I added a little green masking tape to our tree, added a homemade star ornament and let my little ones "decorate" the tree. Add one a day and this would be a cute Advent calendar!
SNOWY JINGLE BELL WREATH
This wreath was basic and tired-looking, the berries were chipped and I thought of donating it! I gave it a "cool" update: a new minty coat of green, an icy blast with my secret-flocking ingredient, and a blast of white glitter.
For this you'll need:
-Krylon Colormax spray paint, in Sea Glass
-Krylon Glitter Blast spray, in diamond dust
-drywall texture spray (the secret ingredient)
-clear acrylic sealer
I sprayed the wreath with the minty green Sea Glass and gave it a heavy dose of drywall texture spray! You'll want to spray from far back with the light setting, then set it to heavy, come up close and give the ends of the greenery a dousing of the spray. After it was coated, I went over the wreath again LIGHTLY with the minty Sea Glass, then again coated it in the drywall texture.
After it was all done, I came back and hit it with the beautiful glitter blast spray, which gives it just a hint of shimmer. After letting it dry over night, it was beautiful as it was. Since this was going on a door, I added a few of these fun, silver jingle bells.
Dollar Store Village Update
For this you'll need:
-white spray paint, in gloss
-Krylon Glitter Blast spray, in diamond dust
-buffalo snow
-LED star light string
-black foam board
We've collected our village over the years from the dollar store, garage sales, and much of it is mismatched. I gave this house a quick coat of white spray paint, followed by a blast of glitter spray.
I also took a strand of battery operated LED lights and used them to create a starry night. Every year when we set up the village, we are limited on where we can put it. These battery operated lights eliminate the cord. They also are on a timer, 6 hours on, 18 hours off. So I can set em and forget em for the rest of the season. 🙂
