The Kid Clothes Survey and Results

    June 18, 2014 |

A few months ago I wrote a post on how to declutter your closet and another on what to do with tee shirts. But kids clothes are tricky! Before I write a post on that topic, I wanted to see the situation in your homes so I posted a survey on our facebook page. Here we go: The Kid Clothes Survey and Results. If you haven't filled it out yet, you can do so below.

    But first,

What is so tricky about kid clothes?

    Here's what I think:

    • they need a lot because they are messy (bodily functions, food, dirt, water, etc)
    • they are constantly changing sizes
    • the sizing is sometimes weird
    • the clothes wear out quickly
    • you don't know if you should save them or not
    • they are cute
    • we make them a sentimental issue

I could probably add a few more bullets to that list because I like bullets they are just that tricky.

    Here's what you said:

When it comes to kids clothes, we have

do other people struggle with kids clothes too? yes, yes they do.

    Well that's a shocker. 😉

I kid. But it is good to know that not only are we not alone, but that we also realize we could always live with less.

When it comes to outgrown clothes and clothing storage:

do other people struggle with kids clothes too? yes, yes they do.

When it comes to clothing number:

do other people struggle with kids clothes too? yes, yes they do.

What do you do with clothes you don't need?

do other people struggle with kids clothes too? yes, yes they do.

How do you feel about laundry?

do other people struggle with kids clothes too? yes, yes they do.

    Well that's another shocker. 😉

    What do I think?

The analytic side of me wants to compare your answers and see how the percentages match up, like how many of you that feel you need more clothing storage also save most of your clothes. I also had two open response questions asking what people needed help with, how they stored their clothes (in season/right size), and how they stored their out of season and outgrown clothes. Those were REALLY interesting to see what people are doing, but with 650+ responses, I need some more time to look those over. And maybe a book to share them all with you. 😉

I'd love to share some of your best tips that are in there as well. I'm not an expert at this, things change for us from time to time, and we're constantly re-evaluating. Just like you, I can use all the help I can.

Overall, I think that we all could stand to declutter more clothes (whether it's a lot or a little). I also think that we don't need as much storage as we think we do. And if we run out of storage, then we should look to purge instead of finding a way to organize it all.

Want to take the survey? Here you go!

I'll be picking one of you to receive a $25 gift card of your choice, so if you have a quick chance, fill it out! 🙂

What do you think about the results?

Any questions you wish I would have added in? Any questions you'd like to see compared?

Hey, just a quick technical note. On the one about what people do with clothes they don't need, the percents are not quite set up right. Since we could pick multiple answers they should each be what percent of the whole. Right now it's measuring the percent each item was marked in comparison to each other. I have a screaming baby in my lap now, so this may be incoherent but they don't need to add up to 100% since we could mark multiple answers. (473 isn't 31% of the people who took the survey.)

      Thanks!
      Erica
