Yes, you read that right, Bacon Popcorn.
I've wrote about how we love popcorn, and I even found a way to make Kettle Corn at home. Lily wanted some popcorn for our snack today and on a whim I decided to use bacon grease instead of our usual coconut oil (with a little bit of butter).
Why bacon grease? Isn't that gross?
No, it's actually a really good, healthy fat and great source of Vitamin D! Take a look at this. Bacon is a treat in this house because we make sure to get either nitrate-free bacon from Trader Joe's or bacon from Ream's, our local meat market. They even have different flavors of bacon, including cinnamon bacon!
We wait to clean our pan until the drippings have cooled off and place it in a small Pyrex container we keep in the fridge. Either that or we wait way too long to clean up after breakfast and put the solidified bacon grease into the container, pick which way works depending on your laziness level. 😉
The bacon grease gives scrambled eggs AMAZING flavor, is great with green beans and onions, anything potato related, good for sauteing onions, the list goes on and on. It gives a hint of a bacon flavor to whatever you add it to and is really the same as using any other oil or butter when you think about it!
The verdict on the popcorn? Not as bacon-y as I would have liked, but there's just a hint to it that adds something special. For real Bacon Popcorn, maybe try adding a bit of crumbled bacon? YUM!
I'll have to try that next time we have the cinnamon bacon on hand... 😉

YUM - I would have never though of that! Too bad it wasn't as bacon-y as you wanted. Crumbled bacon sounds good too!Sarah from The House That Ag Built
